Third Sunday After the Epiphany
With Authority
Mark 1: 21-28

What is it that makes Jesus' ministry so different from the ministry of other teachers of his time? Mark says that Jesus speaks with substance and with authority that is instantaneously recognizable to all who heard him. Both the poet of Psalm 111 and the author of Deuteronomy tell of God being known through wonderful deeds that bring authority. Paul suggests there is authority within us that allows us to act with freedom of choice.

Authority is a common thread in the scriptures for the week. Moses has authority based in the revelations given to him from God about which he may speak. In the gospel of Mark, "Jesus has the authority to help someone move from a state of uncleanness to a state of holiness." (Rabbi Adam Morris) Paul describes an authority based in concern for the spiritual lives of others. What is the basis of your authority? How does that authority impact on the manner in which we live as individuals and the church?
