Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany
Sustaining Ministry
Mark 1: 29-39

Mark portrays Jesus' ministry as having two major thrusts – proclamation of the Word and reign of God, and healing. The word of God is not static. Those who hear and believe its message find themselves ministering to others. Paul reminds Christians of the need to assess the impact of their lifestyle on the message they speak. The additional scriptures describe the limitlessness of God's love and work in creation.

What is our role in proclaiming the gospel and in becoming healers in our time and circumstance? Sustaining balanced ministry requires respect for all God's creation. This respect comes from many sources: reflecting on the past as the poet-prophet does; praising God's deeds as the author of Psalm 147 does; recognizing the potential dangers in becoming too self-absorbed as Paul does; and finding a quiet place to re-evaluate and move forward as Jesus does.
